#1: Common Core: Integrating Web 2.0 Technology to Teach Math Standards

"One hallmark of mathematical understanding is the ability to justify... why a particular mathematical statement is true or where a mathematical rule comes from."

CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice

  1. Make sense of problems and Persevere in solving them
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  3. construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  4. model with mathematics
  5. use appropriate tools strategically
  6. communicate precisely/ attend to precision
  7. look for and make use of structure/ patterns
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

"When students write about their process, it actually cements their understanding for them"

ideas from others:
Idea for writing in math - assign fewer problems but have them write and illustrate the ones they do
#2: Common Core: Flipping Your Classroom and Teaching the Standards

Why should you flip?

  • See an opportunity to drive inquiry about topics before we present information
  • There is so much pressure to get through content, to introduce content
  • Frees up time for student reflection and application
  • Provides opportunities to increase collaboration in and out of the classroom
  • Encourages students to problem solve
  • Students can control the pace of their learning
  • Homework can be more interactive and collaborative
  • Student-centered classroom - what are students actively doing in the classroom based on what was introduced online?

CCSS- more focus on what students should be able to do and less focus on all these specific skills they need to learn.

How can #flipclass help teach CCSS?

  • Reading/Writing skills while engaging with media and collaborating online
  • Students have to read, analyze, interact with other students, use media. Reply and respond to minimum of two peers. Engage collaboratively with other students on internet.

Inquiry (in class) Transfer info (online) student centered activity (in class)
